Galaxy room Week In Review

Nov.11-15 2019

Notes and Reminders

  • Thanks to Louisa’s family for the delicious snack this week!
  • Please be sure to check Brightwheel regularly. We post important reminders (individual and whole class), as well as fun weekly photos!
  • We are running low on our back-up clothing for accidents, so if your child has borrowed PreK clothing, please wash and return it. Also, it is a good time to check your child’s cubby to ensure they have extra pants, underwear, shirts, and socks that are weather appropriate on hand every day.
  • Next week we will begin our Cooking unit!

Monday: No School

Tuesday: In Morning Meeting we introduced the letter Hh as the next letter of our Alphabet Study. This week we also began our Healthy Eating and Nutrition unit, and continued to discuss all the ways we can take care of our bodies. We read My Healthy Body focusing on what we eat. Today we talked about our favorite foods to cook and eat at home! After talking about recipes and cooking, we each contributed a “recipe” to the class cookbook and illustrated it.

Wednesday: We read I Eat a Rainbow. We looked at the rainbow array of fruits and vegetables. Students came up with a great variety of fruits and vegetables from each color of the rainbow, as well as black, brown and white. For our project, students created their own Rainbow Fruit Salad. We had strawberries, oranges, bananas, pears, kiwi, blueberries and purple grapes. Students peeled, sliced, and arranged their fruit in a rainbow pattern. We ate our creations for snack! We also sang the fruit salad song. This was a very exciting and tasty project.

Thursday: We continued talking about healthy eating! We talked about eating a balanced diet of vegetables, fruit, grains, protein, and dairy. We read Edible Colors during group time. In the morning, we worked on rainbow food coloring sheets! Students worked on their fine motor skills by creating some fuse bead forms, a classroom favorite. We also enjoyed reading our class made cookbook.

Friday: We wrapped up our week on healthy eating! We read What Food Is This? by Rosmarie Hausherr, and discussed the different food groups. We talked about the importance of eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy, and grains. We also read Rainbow Stew by Catheryn Falwell. Students worked on their letter H pages during group time as well as practicing their letters A-H. We met with the Irvington Elementary Librarian to hear some stories.
