Galaxy room Week In Review
Galaxy room Week In Review
Monday: In Morning Meeting, we introduced Emma as the Person of the Week, and the letter
Jj as the next letter of our Alphabet Study. This week we started an author study of Jan Brett. We read The Mitten and we talked about the sideboards of the book. Jan Brett uses these to show the reader what is happening outside of the main story as well as what will happen next. This is a great book for kids to start anticipating what happens next in the story. For our project, we began a story sequencing project. We practiced our fine motor skills as we colored and cut out eight animal shapes from the story. Tomorrow we will work on our recall and sequencing literacy skills.
Tuesday: We read The Hat and discussed how it has some similarities and a lot of
differences to The Mitten. Both are winter stories with animals playing the main role, but the hat
serves a different purpose than the mitten. After group time, students continued to work on their
story sequencing project from The Mitten as we arranged our animals to help us create a kind of
storyboard where we can use it to retell the story!
Wednesday: We read Annie and the Wild Animals during group time. Students enjoyed sharing the similarities they found in Jan Brett’s books and talking about the differences between wild animals and animals we may have as a pet. Students worked on Person of the Week pages for Emma’s book, and cat with a candy cane coloring page.
Thursday: Today, we focused on her story of The Three Snow Bears. We read and discussed the book during group time, and we noticed how the story is similar to the fairy tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. For our special project we created our own snow bears using different textured materials. We continued our letter J practice on white boards and started our letter J pages.
Friday: We finished up our author study of Jan Brett. We read The Gingerbread Baby. We talked about what we were anticipating in the story because it is very similar to the story of the gingerbread man. Many students thought that the gingerbread baby would get eaten by the fox, however, the gingerbread baby faces a different fate! For our project, each student decorated a paper gingerbread baby house of their own. This was a fun and simple paper origami house with some fun added details. These charming little houses will be decorating our classroom soon! We had our bi-monthly visit to the library and met their new pet hamster, Gerald. We also read Emma’s Person of the Week book.
